David Rayners wrote a MovableType Dropcash plugin and then held it for ransom through Dropcash until he raised $30. Though his PayPal account is new, and he couldn't accept the payments to reflect on his Dropcash page, he released his plugin as soon as he hit $30.

Chad Everett did something similar with a feature for his MT-Notifier plugin.

I think it's a great way for people to get paid for their work for specific things, rather than general tip-jars that nobody seems to ever want to drop money into.

Also, Dropcash was mentioned in this Guardian story. Along with some words from me.

I've never used the word 'appeals' in that context. Strange how it showed up in there. Also, you don't need a TypePad blog to be able to raise money, just a TypeKey account and Jason Kottke co-created it with me.

Donnie

I'm not sure I am all for the idea of making a profit from blogging.

Andy Baio

Who said anything about profiting from blogging? Those campaigns are both for sponsoring software development.

Schnitz

Hey, idea for ya, Andre: when someone creates a campaign, have a flag that says "I want this to be publicizied by Dropcash." Then have a page which lists all the public Dropcash pages at the moment.

I think it would increase donations. People would come to the site looking for things to donate to. Plus, it's just kinda cool to see what people are requesting money for.

Joshua

Now, I think Donnie has a point. I don't want a world where the unfailing integrity of the blogger has been compromised by the capitalist bourgeoisie.

It darkens the soul to think that money could somehow change hands in exchange for goods or services.

Hypoartist

Blogging has always been compromised. I have sat in many bullshit marketing/advertising meetings with big brand names and heard the brand manager and/or account manager say, "We should do a blog."
